Movie Review: Vantage Point – Spoiler Free

This movie tells about something big. Actually it’s kinda surprising if you don’t know what’s the story. Another surprising factor is how it tells the story. It doesn’t deliver in a single plot. Instead it shows you the main story from several perspectives.

There are several main characters in this movie where the story told from. First there’s Rex Brooks, female TV producer (played by Sigourney Weaver) who lead a team to cover the story on US president who visits Spain, then Thomas Barnes (played by Dennis Quaid) member of US secret service, Howard Lewis (played by Forest Whitaker) an american tourist who takes a holiday to Spain, and President Ashton (played by William Hurt) the US president. There’re more perspectives that I can’t reveal here due to potential spoilers.

Those different characters represent their own story around the same big incident. Somehow they are connected one to another. The story telling between those individual characters perhaps could make the audience bored, especially after Rex Brooks character. But when the perspective of President Ashton revealed this movie starts to enjoy itself.

Most audiences probably do not expect any full action sequences in this kind of movie. The fact is when the true conflict revealed, full speed action sequences are the only thing you will see on the screen. Most of them are well coreographed.

This movie truly holds its focus on the detail from the beginning. It’s very difficult to make several different perspective in the same incident involving so many people having their own versions like this movie does in a well manner. It will be interesting to scrutinize each perspective to find the flaws.

The ending is quite very good. One that really stands out is the emotional relationship between President Ashton and Thomas Barnes. William Hurt truly shows what a good actor he is. The way he looks at Thomas Barnes at the end is very touching. Dennis Quaid who has to act like a physically ill man for the entire movie can keep his job well.

For first timer big screen director Pete Travis, and first time screenwriter Barry Levy, Vantage Point at the end is really a very good movie. An arguably satisfying debut.
