Box Office

Do you know what movie that grossed the most of all time in US? I believe many of you will say Titanic. Yup, that’s true. Titanic grossed about $600 millions in US alone. The 2nd position is The Dark Knight which until now has grossed about $526 millions and keep counting. But do you know what movie that grossed REALLY the most?

Box office chart measures the market performance of movies in terms of currency, in here is US dollars. Titanic in terms of US dollars has the most money earned from theatres compare to any movie in entire history. But as you know, money always devaluated. $1 million now has totally different value compare to let’s say 30 years ago.

There’s another version of all time box office chart which really considers the inflation of dollars. With this, people will have a broader picture on how succesful the movie attract the audiences. It can give general perspective on which movie has more viewers because the ticket price has always been inflated as well.

Now let’s compare the charts. Here’s the top 20 all-time box office chart that we usually see, based on the current value of US$.

1. Titanic $600,788,188

2. The Dark Knight $525,831,387

3. Star Wars $460,998,007

4. Shrek 2 $441,226,247

5. ET $435,110,554

6. Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace $431,088,301

7. PIrates of The Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest $423,315,812

8. Spider Man $403,706,375

9. Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of The Sith $380,270,577

10. The Lord of The Rings Return of The King $377,027,325

11. Spider Man 2 $373,585,825

12. The Passion of The Christ $370,782,930

13. Jurassic Park $357,067,947

14. The Lord of The Rings The Two Towers $341,786,758

15. Finding Nemo $339,714,978

16. Spider Man 3 $336,530,303

17. Forrest Gump $329,694,499

18. The Lion King $328,541,776

19. Shrek The Third $322,719,944

20. Transformers $319,246,193

And here’s the box office chart after adjustment on US$ inflation. These figures came from adjutment on 2008 ticket price averagely at about $7.08. In this version you can see that some classic movies are topping the chart. Titanic dropped to 6th place and we don’t see The Dark Knight because it fell to 27th place.

1. Gone With The Wind $1,430,476,000

2. Star Wars $1,261,086,700

3. The Sound of Music $1,008,300,900

4. ET $1,004,328,700

5. The Ten Commandments $927,480,000

6. Titanic $908,688,900

7. Jaws $906,798,000

8. Doctor Zhivago $878,879,000

9. The Exorcist $782,826,200

10. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs $771,720,000

11. 101 Dalmatians $707,414,100

12. The Empire Strikes Back $695,118,900

13. Ben-Hur $693,840,000

14. Return of The Jedi $665,940,600

15. The Sting $631,131,400

16. Raiders of The Lost Ark $624,044,300

17. Jurassic Park $610,337,400

18. The Graduate $605,845,500

19. Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace $600,566,700

20. Fantasia $587,947,800

The 1st chart is more dynamic because it refers to the actual value of US dollars. We can see the movement of the movies in the chart almost every year. While the 2nd one, while it reflects the true viewer numbers, is less preffered because the figures are difficult to beat. Even 2008 most watched movie in theatres, The Dark Knight, can not make it into top 20.

yup, that’s in us, but perhaps not in the world.
afaik, dark knight is not so big in asia, especially in china and japan. In this market, I think the matrix films, including the matrix reloaded n the matrix revolutions have much more bigger than the dark knight. cmiiw

well i’m not sure about worldwide gross actually. Because in worldwide release each movie might have differences on theatres count and preferences. But yeah I agree with you, american market sometimes is quite difference than asian market.

TITANIC?? hmmm.. someone ever said that he was watched that movie over and over again.. *dejavuu :)

but ……… hey, there is no harry potter in those charts? how come?? :?

yes there are harry potter movies in the chart. But they all fail to make it into top 20

Ternyata Star Wars tinggi juga, perasaan susah banget ajak temen-temen nonton pelem ini katanya ngga suka… Orang luar lebih suka kali yah…

kyknya kalo jenis pilem fantasy di indonesia agak kurang populer ya. Kecuali kalo dikasi banyak action kyk LOTR. Star Wars kalah populer dibanding LOTR.

Titanic? I had to queue for about 5 hours to get the ticket at that time, but not a typical movie that I will watch more than once. But I watched gone with the wind and the sound of music twice or three times I guessed  . Harry Potter the movie is below my expectation, the books are a lot better….lot…lot….better…..

I heard people say that too, that Harpot is better in the books than movies. Unfortunately I read only the first book so I can’t say nothing about it :)

I’m so surprised that the dark knight can be such a huge success

I believe for most of the part they should thank Heath Ledger for that

  9. 9

Makanya kalo mau bikin film laku, matiin aktornya dulu sebelum tayang (good advice)

Tp kalo SW keliatannya justru banyakan fantasinya tuh

Jek …filemnya Maria Ozawa ( Miyabi ) koq gak dibahas..
Itu kan rating penjualannya sangat tinggi, meskipun under ground ..

hehe box office itu hanya ngukur penjualan tiket bingoskop pren. Kalo video atau pay per view ga pernah dimasukin box office tuh. Hehe tapi usulan lo buat ngebahas film maria ozawa boleh juga tuh. Bingungnya mau nampilin gambar yg adegan mana ya

  13. 13

Sori mek, Maria Ozawa emang uhuy tapi favorit tetap aja sama Tina Yuzuki walau kurang ngetop di Indonesia.

wow! ga nyangka TITANIC tetep nomor satu, apalagi jika dibandingin sm tahun keluarannya, cool!!

hehe emang susah buat ngalahin angka segitu. Kyknya kudu nunggu harga tiket bingoskop lebih mahal lagi deh. Biar dgn jmlh penonton lebih sedikit bisa melampaui angka dollarnyah :)
