Alexa Ranking and Page Views
Many bloggers care more about Alexa than Google PR. Mostly because it’s very difficult to increase Google PR compare to Alexa ranking. You don’t know when will Google increase your blog PR and why. In some cases there are bloggers who even got spanked by Google by decreasing their blogs PR without really knowing the reason. Alexa on the other hand claim that traffic is the only factor that they measure. So it’s more transparent than Google PR.
If you look on the Alexa website, it’s clear that there are two major things that they measures. Visitors and page views. Visitors simply tells about how many internet users who reach your blog. Page views reflects the average on how many page reached per visitor. How do you get higher Alexa ranking? Simply from higher number of visitors, and longer they stay there to browse/search for anything on your blog.
To get higher visitors is not an easy thing. It’s very difficult to be honest, especially here in Indonesia. Because the internet users in Indonesia mostly googling for one major thing. Sex. Other things that they like are mp3 download and job openings. So if your blog is not a sex blog, music blog, or career blog I guess you have to work harder to get higher visitors.
Getting higher visitors is one thing, but to get higher page views is another matter. The key here is the total page viewed per user. Theoretically it doesn’t matter if you only have 10 visitors. As long as they open let’s say 100 pages on your blog then you will get higher Alexa ranking.
Portal website such as Yahoo, offers many various things on their website. This is the kind of website which can have a very high page views. Like a supermarket where you can find and buy almost everything you need (one stop shopping), portal website offers “one stop browsing” where you can find almost all kind of informations that you need. You can stay there for hours only browsing on what they have.
Here are the examples of some worldwide/local popular portal websites with their Alexa page views :

3. Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com)

Page views : 3.06
Blog on the other hand, offers much less options and variousity of informations. Blog usually is only one time reading materials. Most bloggers also don’t have any other resources to keep their visitors stay there for hours browsing their blog content. That’s why blog website mostly have small page views.
Here are the examples of some local popular blogs with their Alexa page views :

Those blogs have thousands of visitors everyday (more than 0.001% global internet users) but still their page views is far below those portal websites that I mentioned earlier. From some samples above, I think I can say that Alexa page views for blogs averagely stretched from 1.00-2.00. I believe this is the nature of portal website that gives them the advantage compare to blogs. So knowing this, there are some bloggers who try to make their blogs similar to portal. From modifying the theme, maximizing their sidebars, and keeping their old post fresh.
Other method to increase the page views which is quite useful is using Related Post plugin. With this plugin your visitors will always have some options to visit other posts on your blog related to what they just read. If they read many posts on your blog means your page views will get higher.
I guess this post is long enough so I’m gonna stop here. If you find it difficult to increase your visitors perhaps you can try to increase your page views to get higher Alexa ranking. Obviously I won’t recommend to cheat the Alexa system by, for example, putting some scripts on your blog/browser to always reloading the page everytime a visitor reaches your blog

- Alexa have two variables of average time, one week and three months.
- Now you can play with Alexa, just type some blogs that you know and see the result. It would be interesting to learn the tendency.
