I am Nomads
I’ve been living in Batam for nearly 9 years. During that period I live in 7 different places. The first 2 were company’s houses. The rest I’ve been renting a room in 5 different places.
I lived in the 1st company’s houses for more than 4 years. The first time I lived there I had 3 other occupants living under the same roof. It’s a two floors building. In the last 1-1.5 years of that time I lived there by myself. I got bored after 4 years. Besides, I’m a true male species, means I don’t like to clean up that big house 
After that I decided to move to other company’s houses which was a lot smaller than the 1st one. I lived there by myself for about 2 years. That place have relatively “cheap” surroundings, most notably the food. I remember I could still have a fried chicken menu plus ice tea for about Rp 5000 only. It’s almost impossible to have that in Batam.
Then I decided to buy my own house. I’m only a middle-down class labour so I need to refund my housing allowance to add into the monthly payment of my house. That’s when I started to rent a room.
I paid about Rp 375 thousands a month for the 1st room. I got a spring bed only. I spent only about a month there. I couldn’t sleep if I was working at nite shift because the place is right in front of an elementary school. Man, it’s so noisy there.
Then I moved to the place which is only about 4-5 houses next to it. I could sleep there. I paid Rp 450 thousands per month. I got a spring bed, small fan, clothing racks, and my own bathroom. The problem was sometimes there’s a centipede coming out from the bathroom. Man, I hate that thing. It was only about 2-3 months before I decided to switch place again.
I found a nice room several houses next. The place was right in front of Telkom tower/office. The owner only asked about Rp 350 thousands a month. He gave me very clean spring bed, big roof fan, and private bathroom (without WC). The room was fit for my size. And no centipedes. Actually I liked it there. The only problem that I had was it was very truly deeply really hot. It has a big window but at the wrong side of wind flow
I think it was about 10-11 months before I decided to switch place again. I wanted to stay closer to my workplace. That’s when I moved to one of the most prestigious real estate in Batam. It costed me Rp 750 thousands a month. The owner gave me spring bed and AC (air conditioner) with sharing bathroom for 2 people. I spent about 17 months in there. Then like usual I got bored and moving again.
The last place (my current place) is actually not that far from the previous place. I often had a walk to get some food here. That’s one of the reason I chose this place. I can have various kinds of food nearby from fried rice, “gorengan”, meatballs, chicken noodles, “martabak”, “kethoprak”, satay, “soto”, Padang cuisine, “pecel lele”, “ayam penyet”, fried milkfish, etc.
The owner asked me Rp 600 thousands a month. I got nothing beside my own bathroom (with WC). So far the bathroom is free from centipedes. The thing that I like about this room is that it has small but private terrace. I often standing on my terrace naked after bath
This is the pic of the corridor at the 2nd floor during the night where my room is. It’s quite romantic Well I really hope this is my last room that I need to rent before moving to my new house. Maybe next year. Or perhaps I’ll sell the house and moving to Java island. Anyone interested to buy?
