Movie Review: The Mist

At first I was not interested to watch this movie. Even after I knew the movie is based on Stephen King’s book. But I changed my mind after I knew that Frank Darabont was the director. So far I really like what he’s done with Stephen King’s novel, both with The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

But obviously I didn’t expect The Mist to be as great. The story has less potential to be developed into a great movie. But I did expect something different compare to other typical Hollywood horror movie though. After I watched the movie I have to say that I was not disappointed at all. The story is about a group of people who were trapped in a supermarket surrounded by mysterious mist.

Pros :
- There’s no cheesy thrilling sequences involving surprising music score. I really hate this kind of scenes
- Eventhough the concept is similar to The Fog (John Carpenters/1980), The Mist has different scary creatures. It tries to combine horror with sci-fi element.
- I like to watch William Sadler and Marcia Gay Harden characters in this movie. Both are above the others.
- The creatures are not bad. I really like the gigantic one near the end

- The ending is magnificent. For me, it’s the best part of the movie. Many Stephen King’s book readers hammer this ending because it’s different compare to the book. They said the movie should stick to the book’s ending. In the novel, the ending is open ended. No conclusion at all. So the readers can imagine and choose whatever interpretation they might like to use as their ending. Personally, I think what Frank Darabont did was fantastic. He tried to make a close ending but he didn’t let the movie to be as cheesy as other horror movie. You need to watch it by yourself cause I don’t want to spoil it

Cons :
- there are many other movies using similar situation with this one. Some people trapped in a place surrounded by horror and instead of being united soon begin to fight to each other. Nothing new with this one.
- there’s nothing Frank Darabont can do to develop the story. The movie is really interesting at the start and at the end. But not much we can see in the middle. The characters are average. Sometimes more like cliche.
- sometimes the movie doesn’t try to be more specific in explaining the time between scenes. Especially near the end. It’s causing some plot holes.

General & Rating :
- Director : Frank Darabont
- Cast : Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, William Sadler, Toby Jones, Alexa Davalos
- Genre : horror/sci-fi/thriller
- My Rating : 3 out of 5
