Movie Review: Tropic Thunder
Tropic Thunder is a comedy satire about movie industry. About the actors, producers, agents, story makers, and the world surrounding it. Ben Stiller is not only one of the lead actors but he also directs and writes the story. I have to say that he’s done a really good job here.
The story is about how a big budget war movie called “Tropic Thunder” which based on a book of vietnam war find so many difficulties, especially with the actors, in the production process. The producer was getting impatience. Together with the book writer and FX specialist then the director had to change the way it’s filmed. They release the actors into the wild jungle full of hidden cameras and effects to do the mission as mentioned in the script. Unfortunately, instead of acting in a movie, they have to face the real danger in foreign lands fighting against the troops of the heroin producer gang.
Ben Stiller played as Tugg Speedman, an actor known from his action flicks. Speedman has been criticized over his ability in acting. Well, what can you expect from an action actor. He tried to change his image and fix his downward career by starring as a mentally ill character in a drama movie. He was criticized even more because of that. Finally he found his true audiences, people who really appreciate his acting ability, ironically in a heroin gang camp where he’s taken prisoner.
Then there’s Robert Downey Jr., who played as Kirk Lazarus, an oscar calibre actor. People always admire Lazarus of his totality in acting. He even performed a special surgery to look like an african-american soldier, the character he has to play in the movie. To make it more satire, Kirk Lazarus can’t take out the character even outside the screen. The thing that really upsets Alpa Chino (funny name 
), a real african-american actor who’s also the cast of the movie.
Jack Black played as Jeff Portnoy, a comedy actor. Portnoy had been famous with his fart jokes comedy movies. As a funny guy he almost had a relatively clean image to public. Nobody knows that he’s actually addicted to drugs.
Those are the three major casts in Tropic Thunder. There are other like Rick Peck (Speedman’s agent) and Four Leaf Tayback (a book writer) who shared similar personality problems. Those are the main characters who represent some major players in movie industry. Ben Stiller really did a good job in bringing those characters into different perspective. It’s satire, smart, and funny as well.
There are two actors who shines above the other in this movie. First it’s Robert Downey Jr.. He shows his talent very well in his role as an african-american soldier. The other one is Tom Cruise. Yup, this movie has Tom Cruise in it. He played as Les Grossman, a movie producer. I don’t want to spoil anything about his character. You must watch it by yourself
